Turns out it wasn't MS's fault after all - the culprit now looks likely to be malware of some kind.

Not just Windows 7 according to El Reg:

"The glitch is affecting Windows 7, Vista and XP operating systems..."

Therefore you can upgrade to Windows 7 with impunity: no matter what you're running, Microsoft will still break it for you

UPDATE: actually, the Beeb story you linked to also says that it affects Vista and XP, too. It looks like they're just recycling the Reg story.

BSOD: Black Screen of Death

Microsoft investigates Windows 7 'screen of death'.

Anyone know which patch the article is referring to?

Planning of upgrading to Windows 7 in the next few weeks and would like to avoid this issue.
