How far are you from your exchange?
Cheers for that. Im about 2 kilometers (max) from the exchange. However that's not the issue here. When I was on tiscali, my line speed was consistency 3.8MB/s and occasionally up to 4.2MB\s. Tiscali are LLU.

However since migrating to a supposedly superior ISP and service, first ADSL2 then 8Meg which incidentally costs a lot more than tiscali, the speed is pathetic.

Line noise which was present in the first 2 weeks of migration has now disappeared such that the BT Quiet Line Test is just that. But, Im still getting connection speeds of about 2.6 to 2.9 MB\s on the same line.

It's not LLU where I live. I get 8M down consistently. I'm not in a big city so my exchange isn't ADSL2+

EDIT: The "business" package offers less contention, as I understand it. I figured this would keep my connection fast while others struggle in the early evening in the "after school" rush. I don't notice any slowdowns in "peak" periods.

Thanks. I think I'll give one of their home broadband packages a try. If that doesnt improve things I'll switch to one of their LLU packages.

I used Be for quite a while, very good service and they don't give a fudge what you download (although they are owned by 02).

Have had to change recently as I moved out into the sticks and Be require your local exchange to be furnished with their hardware - my new one isn't.

Now with Plusnet as the options out here are rubbish and all use BT hardware anyway...

This is Talk Talk yes? If so, tiscali are now part of TT.

My neighbour`s Talk Talk router was trashed by a power outage a couple of weeks ago. He had to spend three hours on the phone to India to try and get a replacement. It still hasn`t turned up so he`s using my spare Netgear.

The line has some bad joints or something so it would be the same no mater which ISP I use, BT aren't interested so there's nothing that can be done except wait for fibre in 2030.

I guess you have the same problem, might as well go with the cheapest but not many offer fixed rate these days.
What I dont understand is, tiscali is LLU but the actual line from exchange to my gaff hasnt changed. So why was the line which is now back in BT's hands be noisy when it wasnt under tiscali LLU? The noise issue has settled down since BT last did 'all it could' on the line!

Trouble is the download speed has been halved since transferring from tiscali to BT & IDNet while the cost has effectively doubled and, thanks to 2 teenagers, I about to go over the 10g 'peak time' download limit so extra cost.

I may as well go back to tiscali which was half the price and almost double the speed. OK when tiscali goes down in the SE it affects me in the NW but heck, I think I could put up with that for the lower cost and better speed.

Cable isnt in my area so isnt an option.

WHS, the service itself is excellent but I've found the "BeBox" (rebranded Thompson box) can be flakey so you may wish to source your own (Netgear, Draytek, etc.).

I gave up on BT products when ADSL2 proved to be junk; signed up with O2 LLU and got the first three months free. If you go through Quidco you also get £50 cashback so you`re actually being paid by your ISP.

Aye, you'll be stuffed whoever you go with.
