Ah, OK thanks. I have to say that I have not used any of the software yet that MS has sent me over the last year. Mostly because they did not include a copy of Windows XP or Office 2003 which is what I use in the office.

I would like to try Windows 7 though but am in no hurry.

It's here. I have to say that so far, I'm very disapointed by the size of the box. It looked like it was much bigger in the adverts.

    Yes it has a code.

I do not have a serial code though. Where other people sent a serial code for Windows 7 or does it not require one?

I got the same - I think due to being a MS Action Pack subscriber.

All new windaz OS work great on the first day, until a year later you need to re-install to get the speed back providing you're not running with a 100 tera hertz processor with 1000 gig of ram...

Get a mac - you know it's makes sense.

It's a bit like XP. So miles better than Vista.

That's progress for you, and think of the money MS are making out of it.

"Why it doesn't have virtual desktops like Linux and OS X I don't know, that is the most useful feature that it lacks. Virutal desktops is such an important feature for how I use computers now that I could live without in on a desktop machine."
So whats he moaning about then

Seriously though, windows can do virtual desktops, i've been using Virtual Desktop Toolbox for years.
Unfortunately the company who made it seem to have gone bust.

For some reason MS seem reluctant to put any user interface into allowing management of virtual desktops themselves. Only thing I've seen from them was an XP powertoy which didn't have much in the way of functionality.

I agree. When I went to setup my Cannon printer, I looked on the Cannon website for an x64 driver, which then didn't install as it didn't actually contain an x64 driver. Then I did some googling and binging, and found lots of references to drivers that turned out to be links to those driver installer programs.

Finally after about half an hour I decided to try just plugging it in and switching it on. Windows 7 installed the driver in 30 seconds and it all just worked.

    Doh!

I've used the beta and RTM versions from MSDN, and found it to be extremely reliable and a vast improvement over Vista in terms of performance. The only issues I had were with some dodgy Nvidia drivers for the GPU on my laptop, but once that was sorted it was plain sailing. The device detection also seems to be very comprehensive.

My pre-order copy was apparently shipped yesterday, but there's no sign of it turning up today.

I installed the (64-bit) release candidate on my desktop a couple of weeks ago, and I am very impressed. I've been using it for a while in a VM for testing, but that isn't a fair test on performance and Aero doesn't work etc. But natively, it's definitely the best Windows ever. The new taskbar does work well, but by far the best thing about it is it seems they've nailed the problem of everything going to hell once one application is swamping the hard disk. XP on the same hardware would regularly just grind to a halt.

I was thinking about setting up this machine with Linux, and using Windows VMs, but once I tried Windows 7 I ditched that idea. And then I couldn't get Linux to install anyway.

The copy I've bought is for my laptop, which unfortunately means I'm going to have to buy another copy for the desktop.

I have used it on non-critical machines since the public beta. And since final builds have been available at MSDN I have also upgraded on critical machines.

Works fine for me. I always do a clean install so I do not know anything about upgrading.
