In the end, putting quotes around all the paths with spaces in
    HKLM>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Run

    solved it.

Yes, it was a late night, but I was bored and the only other activity on offer was sleeping, so fixing the PC won... just

Anyway, the message you are getting on start up is probably because the repair has confused the long file name associations.

So when it says "C:\program Files\microsoft", something is probably looking for "C:\program Files\microsoft office" or something similar. Its short name before the repair was probably "c:\progra~1\Micros~x" but is now "c:\progra~1\Micros~1". The startup entry is probably still referring to the old number.

Run msconfig and on the startup tab, disable anything that looks like it might be the one. Also look in All Programs>Start Up. Or even consider the registry - HKLM>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Run

    HTH

Off the top of my head (and probably not very useful, as I'm heading for bed and only came back in response to the call to action in TPD):

Is the card seated properly? It may sound like a dumb question, but I've been caught that way before.

Is the card supported? Almost certainly given that it worked before, but check out the model and have a quick Google to see if there are any known issues, etc.

Is the card defunct? If possible, swap it into a known-good system and see if it plays well there.

Oh, and tell your friend to get a Mac - whether it Just Works or not, you can at least say that you don't support them
