Bear in mind that you are probably wanting to get to know VMware ESX. I think you are talking about VMware workstation which is a completely different kettle of fish. You can install ESX on VMware workstation, here is a link on how to do that

the www.xtravirt.com site has a document on how to install vSPhere 4 on VMware workstation but I cant find the link - I'll let you google it.
