I just wanted to add in some additional security after reading reviews of several bits of software and thought it might be useful. Not interested in hosting websites on my own kit - let an ISP have that worry - but it probably is not worth the extra hassle.

Some of these software tools offer things like secure wireless tunnels which I thought might be useful if sat in the pub or park somewhere using the old laptop to update content on an ISP hosted website.

I don't recommend it. If you do use some form of anonymizer, you will be legally responsible / liable for any content on the site, whether it be paedophilic, child porn or any illegal content, as you will not be able to prove who placed the files onto your system.

It's not quite as curt and dried as that. The EU directive on E-Commerce provides liability safe harbour for service providers that act as conduits for infomration that is posted online and this includes web hosting services and website owners. In general ff you remove any offensive/illegal material as soon as you are informed of it then you are ok within the provision of the law concerning communications service providers. If you don't remove it with a reasonable time then you become liable for it.

However there may still be a case to answer following a German case where even though it was clear that a third party was responsible for creating and posting the offending content, the court held the service provider liable as well. A review of the entire content of the website indicated, in the Court's view, that the service provider identified itself with the communities on the website, supported their creation and benefited from their proliferation. In addition, in its general terms of use, the service provider claimed utilization rights over the contents of the community sites. For these reasons, the Court found that the contents of the communities should be viewed as the service provider's "own content."

Liberal use of disclaimers and activly persuing and removing content when requested is recommended to avoid liability.

Can anyone recommend some good IP Address Anonymiser / Security software that they have personal knowledge of?

I am looking to set up some websites in the coming months, nothing dodgy all legit, but I am thinking of adding some security software above virus and spyware scanning to my PC and thought that this would be a good way to go?

Make sure your website has the external IP address 192.168.0.1

Then it really will be anonymous

What exactly are you trying to do? From the way the post was written it sounds like you want to anonymize the IP of the websites....
