For the money, that full HD Samsung seems very good value. Most 1080p laptops seem well more expensive for a similar spec. I'm very tempted by it.

Update- I've ordered the Samsung. There appears to be nothing else anywhere near the Samsung spec for that kind of price. I'm glad you suggested this laptop, unlikely I'd have found it myself. Note to anyone else who may be thinking of buying one, there are 3 sub-models of R610, and they're not the same thing at all.

Maybe it is becasue I got one of the very first ones, got it the day it came out.

If DELL take the latop back and fix all the issues I would be pleased as punch with it, I am just very sure they will haggle over the screen. I will never but another bit of dell if they dont fix it.

Oh yes, and the sound quality is really really really really bad.

I thought the speakers were bust but googling "dell studio speakers quality" I found out they were working as normal.

I never really use it for that kind of stuff but still considering the market it as laptop to watch films on it is truly shocking.

I'd say the main requirements for Photoshop are:

Native hi-res screen.
Full 4GB RAM
Reasonable CPU.


So that means a 1920 x 1080 (1080p) screen.

I bought one of these last year. Slightly mixed opinion and it needs to go back with more than one problem.

The screen has bright parts to it where it has probably been pushed when in my bag running for trains and what not, I know that dell are going to tell me to get lost when I ask for a replaced screen. Does anyone know what my rights are on this?

Graphics card fails every hour and the screen goes blank for 10 seconds, considering it is a 'multimedia' laptop it's not great, Blueray player has stopped working in the last day.

Backlights on the keyboard have acted up a couple of times.

I got 3 gig and it still drags but I put that down to Vista more than the machine.

I got the 1440 * 900 screen but should have got the larger one.

It is almost the best laptop on the market but I have had too many problems. I am just too busy using it to send it back.

Thanks DP, I am typing on an ACER powered Turion machine that has been just great the last 2 years! Yes, I like that Core2 Duo Dell, I might just consider it. Thanks for the input.

Thanks everything here is 32 bit I'm afraid, but I like to install 4Gb memory as it is then 2 x identical sticks of RAM. I'm a bit daft like that

Screen isn't highest resolution, but at home it will be used with an Iiyama 22" monitor connected. So built in screen only used really at college.

AMD Turion is a crock. Buy an Intel Core 2 Duo!!!!!!! The most amazing CPU it runs cool and is MUCH faster than the AMD. Trust me.

Also, Acer have a bad reputation on reliability and some laptops cannot output a resolution higher than the native screen.

Buy a native 1080p resolution laptop and stick to Intel!

Actually, with respect to CS3 and RAM, last night as an experiment I actually installed CS3 onto my 1.6GHz AMD Turion powered ACER laptop fitted with 4Gb of DDR2 RAM. It runs fine. So I conclude that indeed, RAM is very important versus ulimate CPU power to run CS3? I'm now looking at something along the lines of a 2GHz Core2 Duo with 4Gb RAM as a result of this.

If you are running 32 bit Vista, then 3GB will be as good as 4GB as you lose about 1/2 Gig with the 32 bit Intel memory architecture. If you are going to run 64 bit Vista, then get 4GB (or more if it is possible).

Sorry I disagree with you on the memory front. Vista eats memory and so does photoshop. 1GB will kill the performance and the laptop will be thrashing the HDD to page file.

A 3 or 4GB laptop costs very little more and makes a HUGE difference for Vista and Photoshop.

Infact, I'd have the RAM and spec the cheapest Intel Dual Core CPU if you need to save money.

you dont really need that much memory 2 or even 1 gb will do unless you're planning on opening lots of huge files at the same time but as i said before hi-res screen is a must!!! High resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920x1200) now that's what im talking about, but some people hate these kind of screens, everything is so tiny on those..
