See "iPod: How to determine iPod's hard disk format" if you're not sure what format your iPod is.

I run iTunes on different systems and just make sure that:
Edit --> Preferences --> Devices
Disable Automatic Syncing for iPhones and iPods is not selected
This happened to me originally and all 14,000 songs were lost from my iPod. This seems to work fine for me and I can manually copy songs between iPod and various systems.

I've not tested it, but this blog post is the highest result in Google that corresponds with what I've heard in the past, and appears to have a number of useful links, tips and alternative methods in the comments.

Not sure if you'll be able to save your ratings etc but getting the music onto the netbook is just a case of copying your itunes music folder into the netbook, either via the harddrive or a network connection.

I have an apple laptop with itunes on & my ipod has a mac file system.
The apple laptop CD drive is broke.
I am trying to transfer the itunes onto a new windows based netbook (no cd drive).
When I plug in the ipod to the netbook itunes wants to format straight away, therefore I'd loose my music.
I have tryed to find some free software to help with this, but none have worked so far.
I have access to an external hard disk, which I can use on both laptops.
Any ideas on how it can be done ?
