They've actually improved it over the years. I remember the first version of Visual Studio.net coming on 3 discs and taking hours to load. You could see it unpacking each individual file FFS!

Was thinking of trying the new 2008 Express editions as you can just install the part you're interested in (such as C#, VB, or Web), though I'm sure they've crippled it enough so any professionals will quickly reach a dead end and have to upgrade to the full version.

I installed the VS2005 service pack on ClientCo. PC yesterday, and it took the best part of half an hour, on a reasonably fast PC. WTF is it doing?

VS2005 is my favourite environment by far, but light weight it aint.

Although can't really understand disc space requirements MS gives. VS2005 dotnetfx.exe is about 23mb and after instalation on XP the .net folder is about 91Mb. Where does the 280Mb for 32 bit machines and 610Mb for 64 bit machines come from? Temp files can't take up that much surely?

Most of my stuff is image processing and VB.net is significantly slower than VB6 at manipulating images in my ed s/w. The installation time and disc requirements of even VS2005 are excessive enough, not every little village school has the latest equipment. Why can't one just install the dlls one actually needs instead of the whole darn framework?
