As I like to use my own equipment when on clients sites, and so can't connect to their LAN, I use vodafone £15 for my laptop.
I looked at where I was likely to be working, where the coverage was, whether or not HSDPA was at hand, and Vodafone had the best coverage for me. £ don't have HSDPA in Chippenham.
I've been using it for about a year and its pretty good.

I get 3gbt on 3 for £7.50 a month. It was half price if you had a phone with them. I thought it was that price anyway now. It workd ok but does keep dropping the connection

I would expect there are some furious back room workings going on at the moment. According to the devs the app doesn't breaks any of the rules and should be back up at some point in the future so we will see.
I think Apple need to start accepting that some of these apps are a good idea and will only increase the iPhone user base. Also one way to stop people from jailbreaking it is to give people the useful everyday apps and functions that they want and can get with other phones.

I'm on the 3Gb/£15 month tariff from Three, and get speeds of between 800kbps and 1.2mbps while I'm at ClientCo.
I'm better off communicating with paper cups and string from home though - mobile reception is non-existent there anyway.

O2 do unlimited data and wifi with thier iPhone tariffs, however you will need to purchase an app from the itunes app store to be able to use your iPhone as a modem.
The app is MIA at the moment unfortunatly....

May be worth a look when they sort it all out if you are interested in an iPhone.

I was in a black spot in St Ives last week, the one area my 3 modem had no signal.
Thankfully, some kind (anon) soul with an unprotected wireless router kept me connected

The reason for the test in the first place is because he was moaning about download speeds.
As i said before, the 3g coverage is what counts and 3 has better 3g coverage

Interestingly, I did a side by side test with a fellow contractor who has the vodafone mobile broadband - we both have a huawei USB device, not the internal broadband that comes with some laptops
I got 350 kb/s
he got 65kb/s
The vodafone 3g coverage is not as good at the 3 network, so although for voice calls vodafone is better, for mobile broadband (at a decent speed) 3 is better.

only problem i've found with the broadband is that i can't use my wireless mouse at the same time. It seems to interfere with the USB device and kills my speed

Thanks chaps!
I'm much happier considering brands that have been used in real-life...
