I use VMWare Workstation and VMWare server (Free) on a regular basis. I currently have Ubuntu running at 1600x1200 in VMWare server after installation of VMWare tools.

I hope this is of some assistance.

So do either of you know that VMWare solves the problem? I found something that says VMWare player is restricted to 1024x768.

Virtual PC is what Microsoft thought would be good enough for you several years ago; now they give it away for nothing they aren't exactly tripping over their own feet as they rush to improve it.

VMWare, on the other hand, is designed for actual use, not just a way of pretending they're doing their customers a favour.

Ubuntu under MS Virtual PC

Anybody with any experience?

I fought the mouse issues, the networking issues, and most of the display issues, but I can't get it to go higher than 1152x864. I'm using a 17" 1280x1024 LCD, so 1152x864 looks crap if full screen.

The emulated graphics card is capable of doing it, and just to add insult to injury the "ubuntu" logo that appears whilst booting is in 1280x1024, but it then switches back. If I try to use the configure app, everything breaks and I get stuck with 800x600 and the only way out of that is to run the X-server reconfigure program.

And it is set to 16-bit colour.
