Vista dropping internet connection

I've not seen this problem in many deployments - however If you want to follow the hunch that the router is not getting on with your machine - give the following a try:

Disable TCP/IP Auto Tuning features:
Run "netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable" as an administrator , in a command prompt.

If you want a full explanation of what this does , give google a search - it's basically extensions to TCP/IP stack for gigabit networks which keep changing window sizes , something some routers just dont like.

I should add that a reboot is required and "netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal" will reset it to its default again.

What quality software Vista must be. Remember folks, up until Win XP, MS used the BSD TCP/IP stack and it worked flawlessly. Vista is the first time that an MS developed TCP/IP stack has been deployed to the general public. And how it shows.

BTW : Rebooting to make network changes is so 1990s...

There is a known issue with Vista regarding Internet/Email software that is expected to be fixed with SP1.

A lot of users have they email client seize up - ie cannot send receive email because an item has got stuck in the outbox. Same users also keep dropping the internet connection - not just when the machine goes into hibernation.

MS blame everything on Anti-Virus/Firewall software being to integrated with the operating system. I had to uninstall Norton and install AVG, then reconfigure the connections.

I've put the connection on static IP and its doing the same thing. Obviously the router/bridge and the laptop don't like each other.

This really is frustrating.

yes, mine too - vista and xp thru a router.

up and down this morning for no good reason.

then it just started to work after about 30 mins.

Just stops working while I'm using it. Sometimes it comes back after a minute sometimes - like today - it didn't come back at all. Note that I can still access other PC's on the LAN, just not the internet!

It truely is bizarre. Unless it is the bridge...would not doubt if there is a bug in the firmware of the bridge. But then, why only the Vista Laptop, my XP laptop has no problems at all.

Anyway, have gone to the manufacturer's website and downloaded the latest drivers, will try it again at work tomorrow. I wonder if the IPv6 stuff is messing things ups?

You've got it the wrong way round.

The internet is dropping Vista. Sound move.

Not seen that one either, but have you tried with another user? As have said before, when Vista screws up the problem generally seems to be in the local user settings.

I don't have this problem personally, but I have heard of LAN drivers giving up the ghost after a laptop had gone into standby before. Is it after standby/hibernation or just that it stops working after a while of constant use?

There should should be an option you can check somewhere that stops vista turning off the LAN card if it does go into standby that will get round this but I can't remember where it is off the top of my head (Not on a Vista box atm)

Anyone haveing trouble with Vista dropping internet connections?
The wireless used to drop them...and hang the PC at the same time. But new drivers has sorted that.
The ethernet controller though seems to have troubles. Works for a while, then no, then works for a while, and so on. Quite frustrating.
Anyone have similar troubles. Yes, I have the latest drivers installed...well
what Windows Updates calls latest.

Then, of course, the laptop is connected to a bridge...which has two other XP PC's on it. When the laptop loses the internet connection, these XP PC's access the internet just fine. So I don't suspect the bridge.
