It sounds good at first but it soon falls to bits. You start off with an OK set, but then they all need changing at different intervals and fall out of step; then some passwords insist on non-alphanum characters, and others don't allow them, and then it's all a mess. It's a bit like the tax credits system.

Password safes? There are indeed several and they are all near enough identical.
My favourite is called, simply enough, 'PasswordSafe': http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/

Also tried KeePass but I don't like it so much, mainly because of its stupid name.

You could have the same password for everything as root and then put 3 or 4 letters of the company site on the end.

E.g. my root password is

Online Pension with Standard Life

Or some similar scheme. Any good?

I've used a pocket PDA for years. Portable, password protected and the batteries last for months. The memory isn't lost when the batteries are removed and it can be backed up onto PC.

I'll second that - RoboForm is by far the best one I've come across and as an added bonus I only need to keep everything on my (password protected!) pen drive so no need to duplicate password data around my home pc's. Worth the licence money.

I use keepass & keep pretty much everything in there. I have no idea if it can be hacked or not.

Likewise I don't know if the truecrypt drive the safe is stored on is crackable either.

I just use excel with sheet protection and a bit of vba. As it know this can be cracked I do not put actual uids/passwords for important stuff like bank etc. just very cryptic clues as reminders.

I've always been wary of these, I'd be worried that if the 'safe' was cracked they'd end up with all my passwords rather than just one.

I have a few accounts that I only access maybe once or twice a year so I keep a notepad with a question on it that will reveal a password, I can't see how anyone could possibly crack that without breaking into my house and interrogating me!
