Would it not be safer to link the smtp addresses themselves and have that defined as a list?

Other than that, maybe you could take a look at the exchange / mail server side of things and see if what your after is defined there as opposed to client-side?

If you really need specialist help, I used to work with a load of MS Exchange contractors and I could give one of them a shout?

Why?, joined up thinking and all that.

I want to be able to link things up so that if I receive an email and it matches one way or another a message from the same person from a different address, or with a different version of their name, e.g. 'Black, J', 'Joe Black', 'Black Joe' or 'j.black@s3.com', 'joeblack@s2.com' (you get the idea), then I will have the option to link them to the same person or emails sent or received previously.

started a topic Outlook, MAPI and all that.

    Outlook, MAPI and all that.

Been trying to find a way to change an email in Outlook so that the sender name appears, and refers to, an existing entry in an address book.

I've tried changing the address-entry of the message, the Outlook 'from' properties, various MAPI sender properties, and even the message itself. But once it seems the message is received the best I can do is change the name it appears from in the Inbox. Once you double-click on the sender though, it still shows the original name, e.g. change to 'Joe Black' (in the address book), double-click still shows 'Black, Joe'.

Ideas? Am I just going about this the wrong way or doesn't MAPI/Outlook allow you to change details of who has actually sent the message?
