Thanks for re-posting. Of course, it was elementary, not stupid It's a mistake that I've made too: maybe your post will save someone else from making it.

You may well be right that CUK is not the place to post serious questions, nor to remove what you think is stupid.

I deleted the post because it was relatively stupied question and I got the answer somewhere else, I also thought after CUK wasnt a good place to post it.

If you interested though, I was questioning what the correct behaviour for the following UPDATE statement was,

    UPDATE TABLE1 a
    SET a.JOB = (select b.job from temp b where a.id = b.id)

I assumed it would only update where the join condition of a.id = b.id was met but it appears not. Anything that didnt meet that condition was updated to NULL anything that did meet that condition was updated to the value in the temp table. It was late on Friday and I wasnt sure if that was the correct behaviour or somewhere along the line I hadnt been commiting my changes.

Anyway the answer was it was correctly nulling stuff where the join conidtion wasnt meet. To fix this I need to add a WHERE statement witn EXSITS IN.

    The END 'Test Post Please'

    Thanks

Seriously, isn't that a little self-centred? Please leave the question here, and post the solution too. That is how Usenet and Bulletin Boards became a reserve of knowledge.

Not to be too rude, but deleting the question because you have the answer is a little like those who post a question and add "please reply by e-mail because I rarely read these discussions". If you use it, contribute too; they also contribute who ask, as well as who answer.
