Aye, iTunes is just a database pointing to the music files so can easily use a different front end if decide iTunes is no longer favourite. I have my music files on a NAS too as primary backup, with iTunes in a VM that has a drive letter mapped to the NAS folder.
Only thing I had to do to get iTunes to work with my pre-existing music collection ripped from CDs was to convert the FLAC files into Apple Lossless, which I have in a sub folder for importing into iTunes so the original ripped files are untouched in case anything tries to DRM it.
