I was about to upgrade it to be modern & pretty ... but my (mostly age 50+) customers seem to love it, so I decided not for fix something which wasn't broken!

Good call. No point upgrading for the sake of it and peeing of paying customers who are happy with the current situation.

Perhaps I'm expecting too much ... I just don't like seeing dead fragments of "code" in my web pages.

I have a large but VERY old fashioned site ... I was about to upgrade it to be modern & pretty ... but my (mostly age 50+) customers seem to love it, so I decided not for fix something which wasn't broken!

Nvu has a reasonable CSS editor. Make use of it.

Nvu isn't that untidy - it's much better than FrontPage.

I just had to deal with a bit of extra white space, really.

Use Quanta+ to tidy the code up.

How complex is your site?

One less crufty old website without deprecated tags is for the better of everyone, so I'm not going to bother Googling for what you want...

CB is spot on. They are all deprecated tags in HTML. The visual representation should be in CSS.

AFAIK, there isn't a tool out there to do what you want, probably due to the above.

You shouldn't be setting fonts, colours, layout etc using HTML, that's what CSS is for. Then you won't get any redundant code...

HTML Optimisers?

Hi,

I use NVU to create HTML ... but after lots of edits of a page it leaves all sorts of dead junk behind.

Is there a good HTML optimiser out there, free or commercial?

Most optimisers seem to simply strip whitespace and remove some very simple redundancies.

However I am looking for a REAL optimiser which can detect redundant code by tracking the current "bold" level, font details, colour etc... in other words the optimiser knows if the context is ALREADY say "red text colour" and so so won't repeat a colour command.
