It depends on your budget and whether you want continuous lighting or a combination with flash. Then you will need to take into account modifiers and other tools of the trade.

Are you talking about something to take photos of items you want to sell on eBay?
If they are objects you can move around, then the best thing is a light box or light tent... Photo Light Tent | eBay

Portable photography lighting

If you anyone here is into photography, could you recommend a compact enough light source that can act as lighting for taking photographs of smaller items? Ballpark size of typical object up to one feet wide.

I'd like to bring the light to the object to be photographed rather than having to find a spot that happens to be well lit up at a particular time in the day.
