    And we are back to post 2 of this thread.

    For a laptop on a budget when you don't care about brand but do care about quality the best option is dell outlet's business machines...

    There were 14 and 15 inch models over the weekend with a 1920x1080 screen i5 processor and an ssd for less than £500 ex vat...

    ^This, also my biggest beef with cheapo laptops is the screen resolution. 1366 x 768 is absolute tulip and lower than most high end phones.

    s/h and outlet stores are probably your best bet for the price band mentioned.

    Being a cheapskate I have a s/h M3800 I bought off Ebay; essentially a £2K laptop for £750 with half the warranty left. I was able to sell my old i7 XPS15 for £250.

    It all depends on usage of course, but for an i5 with 8gb ram SSD is the most important upgrade, not processor or memory. It also saves battery life.

    Asus is very close to anus....


    Got Fujitsu (?) laptop livebook - 8 Gb RAM, SSD,15" screen - battery life is excellent, spent couole of hours in taverna and still 7-8 hours left

    Check it out on ebuyer - around 750 ex VAT

    I've had three Asus laptops, including current one with i7 and 16GB RAM. Super stable, never failed or crashed.
