Well, maybe, thanks d000hg.
I tried the HDMI - VGA convertor between laptop and VGA monitor for a whole day first no problems.
I didn't try pi to HDMI monitor - didn't have one at the time.
Pi to adaptor to VGA monitor worked for a while, but I noticed a burning smell and D2 (IIRC)
got very hot and popped. I'll replace it when I find the time - and a magnifying glass....

Adaptor quarantined....

Just a warning to others, Raspberry PI + VGA monitor + cheap HDMI to VGA adaptor = Psst! Phutt!
It seems that the RPi HDMI interface can't provide enough current to supply some cheap HDMI - VGA adaptors.
Result is a burnt-out surface-mount diode package that's a pig to replace.

Learned this the hard way.....
