I noticed on mine that I am covered for £5k worth of office equipment. Might be a better idea to have a chip pan fire and get a new kitchen at the same time

Think carefully about claiming. After the loss of your no claims (assuming your household policy has it) and any excess and the loaded premiums it may well not be worth claiming unless it is an expensive laptop.Originally posted by TonyEnglishPresumably they will only pay out the value of an equivalent spec laptop.

thaks for all the info but the machine has now gone the shape of a pear. It starts with a garbled image and shows screen loads of random charachers when in DOS mode. As it is over 2 years old I don't really think it is worth getting it repaired. Insted I am considering putting a claim in as my house insurance covers me for up to £5k worth of office equipment. How much damage could the collapse of a shelf full of heavy books do to a laptop? Presumably they will only pay out the value of an equivalent spec laptop.

try the flat connector
Behind the display its normally connected by a flat connector (copper strips in a clear plastic ribbon), on a lot of the displays this tends
to come loose. Push together apply a little sellotape and hopefully that should solve it.

Laptop Screen
My screen works fine 95% of the time, but every now and then it goes to a bright white screen. I presume this is the backlight. This seems to happen ....
1 - When you first switch it on, before it does its post stuff it is bright white.
2 - When its going from the black dos screen to the graphics mode for Xp
3 - when you leave it for a while in XP - disabled screen saver, suspect it is the power save functions kicking in.
the thing is out of its warranty. Any suggestions as to what I should attack with my trusty screwdriver?
