It seems a little naive to think that if England had won on 30th June 1996, that would have given Major a sufficient boost to have any influence over the May 1997 election, which had a majority of over 250 and nearly 4 million more votes.

From what I remember various political commentators at the time thought that England winning would benefit the Tories in the upcoming election.
