Instead a small army of parole officers, psychologists and social workers will get involved at great taxpayer expense.

And if that is the case, where do you stop? Blame the parents' parents' parents?
Indeed. If you look at most criminals, background is the main factor. Most child abusers were abused themselves. Try reading what Rose West went though from infancy. Doubt many of us could suffer the same and be much better.

Why it is not worthwhile wasting a lot of time trying to assess motives and culpability IMO, we should sentence mainly on the basis of ongoing risk to the public.

    That's why it's frustrating.
It's marginally easier to blame parents because at least they've had the opportunity to grow into adulthood. But ultimately people often are damaged beyond repair and will damage their kids in the same way.

Only a widespread embracing of peaceful parenting will eventually weed this kind of thing out. Unless the kid is just mental - but that's almost never the case.

    Another day in Luton

BBC News - Luton boy, 16, filmed beating animals banned for life

Why can't they be named? Apart from the fact that MrsBP and cat lovers everywhere would give him a boot in the head that is.....
