I've managed to avoid it, at least thus far. I did have to educate doodab jr as to the dangers of looking at the sun with his magnifying glass though.

What, that neglecting your daughter is in some way comparable to kidnapping hundreds of people? The ONLY tiny link is that females are involved in both cases. If Dave's kid was a son in that story the joke wouldn't even work slightly.Originally posted by doodab View PostHe does have a point though.
I'd wager the majority of parents have done something that dumb, if not as publicly - left them in the car/house, come into a room to find them reaching towards the fire, etc etc.

Ah, cheap shots for your own ego's sake. Hardly the mark of a decent comedian.

That's a fair point. In that situation he has to give a a yes or no answer and he couldn't very well say no could he?Originally posted by Dactylion View PostTo be fair he was somewhat "bounced" into that....
He was sitting there when on live TV she shoved it in front of him - at which point he couldn't really say "No I won't "support" you....." Well not without looking a total nob anyway!

He may well be having a "word" with his minders and the tv guys as well about being ambushed in this way!
You could easily argue that he should have expected it etc etc but that really is a risk of "live" tv.
On a slightly different subject - Is it just me or does anyone else think "Whiter shade of Pale" whenever they mention the alleged kidnapers?
... No??? - Just me then!!

Raising awareness is good although for everything that becomes super-high-profile, 20 others are not getting noticed.Originally posted by mudskipper View PostArguably it does do some good.
Three weeks ago, nobody was aware of the issue.
Some events benefit from high profile though and I'm not sure this is one of them. Some kidnappers might relish the publicity!

Fair point. I'd be useless in the jungle. That's why we pay to train soldiers for such things.Originally posted by doodab View PostAs we (mostly) aren't trained soldiers with access to advanced weaponry and intelligence calling for the government to deploy troops is about all we can do, apart from joining in the tweets which I am not really impressed by.

I only knew about the kidnap because I clicked through to Africa news to see what was happening with the Prestorius trial, and it was several stories down.
Social media raises awareness which puts pressure on governments to put pressure on other governments. Obama has now sent help (dunno if we have too?). I don't reckon this would have happened if it hadn't got into the public consciousness.
Apparently this (girls being kidnapped) has been happening for ages, and has happened since, just not on the same scale.

Agreed. This tweeting business feels somehow incredibly tasteless.Originally posted by doodab View PostAs we (mostly) aren't trained soldiers with access to advanced weaponry and intelligence calling for the government to deploy troops is about all we can do, apart from joining in the tweets which I am not really impressed by.
