    £53/week has to cover everything else as well as food, other than your rent. Saying one person can live off £53 at the supermarket each week is easy. You could have steak and wine every night for that budget

    £1/day - not TOO hard if you don't have allergies and don't mind eating the same thing several meals/days in a row. If you ruin something, you're stuffed though, you have to eat it anyway. Like the story of some friends who were living on a shoestring and used some crazy chillis, thinking they were regular peppers, in a big dish. That was their food for several days, so they had to eat it.

    Not round here. Our local market is full of stalls run by trendy downshifter types who think it's Borough Market. The prices are inflated accordingly.
