Not quite a Walkman, but when I were a lad, I had a Saturday job in a Radio & TV shop.

Was seduced by one of these in the shop window and paid for it at a pound a week out of my wages

After poly, I worked in electronics designing and manufacturing speed measuring instruments among other things.
A panel mount tachometer / counter sold for about £100 - cost about £40 to make.

I once purchased a £5 walkman clone from Asda to see how they could sell it for that. Bill of materials from the likes of RS came to £20 before I even started to think about the plastic bits!

I had a summer job in a Glasgow music / hifi shop and it turned out we had the first Walkman in Scotland. A whole day dealing with the press and the BBC doing articles, trying it out etc. It was a big deal at the time.

I had an Aiwa one, it was pretty damn good until I decided to investigate the internals:

Ooh I 'ad one like that.

It got me through many a train journey with my sanity reasonably intact.

oh and also the fact that they ate tapes on a regular basis - especially the cheap C90's used for taping the charts off the rasio.
    +1

And the front cover of mine fell off, so you ran the risk that the tape would try to fall out while playing it.

It was a fine art quickly working out whether the tape was slurring because the batteries were low or because it was being chewed up.

Got one in a drawer in the bedroom. Dunno if it's an early model.
