BOTP was created as a much less violent version of Gatachman for the American teen market during the late '70s Space/Sci-Fi craze.

Your avatar should have been a big clue, but watching that only (and subsequent googling) just made me realise that Battle of the Planets was a spin off. Used to love that as a kid.
