Occupied Jerusalem: 3
October, 2001 (IAP) --
According to Israel radio (in Hebrew) Kol Yisrael, [Shimon] Peres warned [Ariel] Sharon Wednesday that refusing to heed incessant American requests for a cease-fire with the Palestinians would endanger Israeli interests and "turn the US against us."
At this point, a furious Sharon reportedly turned toward Peres, saying "every
time we do something you tell me Americans will do this and will do that. I want to tell you something very clear, don't worry about American pressure on Israel, we, the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it."

Pity that the West did not pursue a more even handed approach before this happened. I'm afraid the Arab view of the UN as dominated by friends of Israel is wholly accurate. Unless we provide some workable alternatives we are never likely to tempt anyone out of terrorism.
That said, the idea that Israel is deliberately bent on maximum destruction is not supported by the facts. Some military analysts place Israel as the world's third military power. If they were bent on destruction there would now be many tens of thousands of casualties in Lebanon not low hundreds.

Originally posted by SinbadJust remember that Bush has little time left in power and that whoever takes over will want to scale back the war commitment in Iraq, especially if a democrat gets in to the white house. The Iranians are very clever, they will not want a confrontation with the USA but nor will the USA risk another Vitnam. Iran will continue to attack the false American regime in Baghdad through its insurgency army in order to return power to the people of Iraq.
The Americans will without doubt be eventually forced into a humiliating retreat from Iraq.
after that their influence in the world will diminish and Israel and Saudi will become exposed. It is not a question of whether the evil Americans will be driven out of the middle East it is just a question of when.
I can see the Israeli population abandoning their country and being relocated to Alaska that of course depends upon whether they will be allowed to leave by the arabs
The Israelis will never leave Israel. Many were born their, and it is their home. They won the country by armed conflict, and that is how they will keep it. Anyone who thinks that they will get rid of them is a fool, or ignorant. (Talk with Israelis and see.)
I also disagree that America will allow Iran to take Iraq as the consequences would be horrific. Do you seriously think they would allow that? Even President Carter, a liberal moderate, said that he would wage war on any country that threatened the oil supply. That attitude is central to the US philosophy.

Originally posted by FungusI don't see the American administration allowing Iran to take over Iraq, although it could be argued that the American people will revolt, leading to the withdrawal of US troops. I would have thought that the consequences would be so awful, that no administration would allow that to happen.

Originally posted by SinbadAs a muslim contractor who doesnt take himself too seriously I am however appalled at what is happening in the middle east. The Israelis are bent upon a path of destruction that will inevitably lead to their own downfall as their neighbours unite against them. The question is will the West intervene when Iran eventually takes over Iraq (as it must surely do) to defend Israel when it finds that it no longer has superior military firepower?
Interesting. Either the Americans want to keep their oil supplies or they want to keep Israel. Which will it be?

Originally posted by AlfredJPruffockPerhaps the reason that the Saudis have been so unusually critical of this conflict is that it could ignite an uprising in their own turf, as for buying off Iran that is easier said than done given the Saudis bankrolled Iraq in the Iraq Iran War.
Who is to really gain from the turmoil in the Middle East?
When I apply qui bonum it seems the Oil and the Arms industry are racing ahead, humanity once again dumped broken and lifeless on the floor.

They never have done and I think they never will.
Even the Arabs treat the Palestinians as “Not in my own back yard”

I doubt if that is Iran’s’ intention, you need to read the intelligence reports by the FSB. The Iraq war is by proxy.

Both as it has been in the past.

Originally posted by AlfredJPruffockInteresting question,I did pose a similar question last week as to whether Washington would follow the demands of Tel Aviv or Riyahd given the unusual vocal complaints from Saudi Arabia ... for my money I would have thought the Oiligarchy must give the Saudis preference given the latters leaverage of the US economy and the Global Oil industry.
Time Will Tell.
