Well, I was thinking of putting a Xeon E5-26 something into a single socket motherboard and reusing an existing case. If I was looking for a big case I'd probably go for one of the supermicro ones, they are quite pricey though.

I think the 6 core i7 is probably a better bet, it's clocked a lot faster so works out about the same. I don't really need it now though, so I will probably wait and see what the next generation i7s look like.

Xeons only really needed when one requires/can take advantage of:

1) ECC memory of much higher capacities (in new SKA servers we use 384 GB RAM as standard) than desktop CPUs allow (mainly due to intentional crippling)

2) multi socket operation to have more cores/memory

High clocked Xeons with lots of cores are very expensive - Intel has been increasing prices in the last few years to make up for shortfall in desktop sales.

New Xeons should be launched soon (Q3), Ivy Bridge-EP's - http://news.softpedia.com/news/Ivy-B...y-360889.shtml

There are already single socket Haswell based ones, but they are only quads for single sockets.
