Ok, I think I have sussed this now. If anyone else is interested

The best way would be to go over on a 457 visa (giving you up to 4 years based on circumstance) and get a 'casual/contract' job when you are over there. You work in the same way as an umbrella company over there (Payroll company of something). You then get a salary and all tax is dealt with by them.

You can also carry on earning from the UK LTD and will only pay UK taxes as long as you can prove to Australia you still intend to leave the country.

    Thanks for the replies.

The 457 visa seems to be the way forward. The tax aspect would make sense as I would get a wage and taxes will be covered under PAYG. The only thing I need to get my head around now is how dividends I pay myself from my UK limited would be taxed when Im over there.

    Thanks

Contracting here in Oz is different to the UK. Most contractors do not have their own company.

To make it worthwhile having your own company here you have to expense *a lot* - which means you have to be buying a lot of stuff.

All the contractors I know except one, do PAYG via a payroll company.

We have the 80/20 (IR35) rule here too, and if you do the PAYG it doesnt apply.

You probably want to talk to a management company like freespirit about a 457 visa. Get that , then find a contract.

I'd say you have to be an Australian resident to start up your own limited company. Google: 189 visa - this would give you PR so you can do what you want.

There are plenty of other visas too.

There are a couple of companies that specialise in placing contract workers in Australia - they have packaged services for finding work, accomodation, etc. I think I've seen them advertising on Jobserve in the past.

No idea if they're any good or not.
