Good thing about the Thames is, the locks are manned by professional lockkeepers, you just have to do as they tell you and they do the rest.

what age are the rug-rats? a boating holiday where they can join in is brilliant, if they're toddly little things that require constant attention it could just add an extra layer of traps (lock them inside with a jigsaw?)

One of my fave things though, heading off for a mini trip on the Thames tomorrow with no.1 son (17 so he can do all the work...), a couple of good friends, a fridge full of snacky crappy food and plenty of "chateau-box 2013"

I love tootling around the canals but there is something about it that brings out the Captain Bligh in the most mild-mannered of people. I don't mind the locks.

I remember locks being quite stressful, hence thinking the broads might be a good choice. Will be accompanied by something between 1 and 3 offspring, so romance not high on the priority list. Hubby is expert at everything, so I'm sure skippering will be a doddle for him. I'd love the proper sailing thing, but not sure that rest of family would be up for it. Maybe a 4 day break would be better...

Yes did it in NI a long time ago. Apart from minor problems like losing one of our kids overboard (children are easily replaceable, I don't know why some make such a fuss about it) it was great fun.
