I have a "smart meter" but even so people kept turning up to read the meter. When I asked why the answer was something along the lines
"We don't know who has or hasn't got them on the street so we have to ask everyone"

Smart meters are the ideal for the electricity / gas providers, since they now know exactly how much you use, at the different times of the day, so can price accordingly.

Smart Meter
Think we have this here in Ireland, Aircitricy or something?

One of the prime reasons for smart meters, is to enable the grid to match demand with supply.
This avoids brown outs and surges.
The way it avoids them is by switching off the plonkers who have had them fitted.
Welcome to the new green paradise, plonker

Yep and some forgot to reset the password, so it's the default password at manufacture.

the great thing with a smart meter is that they can turn them off remotely.
which fwitt thought of that?
predict they get them installed and anonymous turn off all the houses belonging to government officials.

It connects using 3G phone technology (it has a SIM), readings can be taken at whatever interval the meter owner sees fit.

Smart Meter
Moving house, had estimated bills for over a year as no one came to read the meter. Phoned to get final bill with latest reading and got hit with a £800 bill.
Anyway lesson learned so want to get one of those smart meters installed in new place. I see the government want them installed in all homes by 2020, so anyone done this? do you get some kind of grant? Does it connect over wifi? Is it realtime?Tags: None
