    Don't you remember the double slow snot stream that could be sucked straight in once it reached your lips? A snotty nose doesn't seem to bother my boy when he's manually 'dead heading' flowers, squashing spiders and scattering stones on the lawn.

    Possibly to give their immune system a better chance to sample germs and particles breathed in and trapped in the mucus?

    Not entirely clear how, or even whether, the digestive system could be involved with something like that. But you never know.
