Why not head to the Isle of Wight, it's close and the weathers usually better there. No shortage of beaches either

Naah, I'd rather go a bit further west to Lymington, New Milton, Barton on sea; though they're bucket & spade, but not really crabbing territory. More sandy beaches without enough rocks for rockpools.
Too late for MF's post but if you are close enough for that then try Mudeford Quay for crabbing, down there last year the whole of the quay was lined with people dropping little muslin bags of bacon into the water and pulling up crabs. When you have had enough of that you can walk down the path to Avon Beach. Good beach with toilets and shops there with deck chair hire etc. Not the best beach as quite pebbly but they nearly all are around that neck of the woods from what I have seen... Was really nice and will prob go back again this year.

It's OK, but you can be stuck in traffic jams for ages getting through that causeway onto the island

Take Isle of Wight ferry first thing in the morning, and drive to the South West coast of the island ("the Military Road").

There are some excellent almost deserted beaches, accessible by walking down cliff paths, and you can often find large lumps of amber lurking under bits of seaweed.
