I sometimes think that giant ziggurats or a more pyramidal structure, with terrace gardens on each level, would make more sense for mass communal living despite needing a larger footprint.

For a start, they could readily hold huge water tanks to maintain temperature efficiently, put out fires, supply the inhabitants, and water the exterior gardens and interior hydroponic plants.

Also you could have personal dwellings round the outside, where daylight is available, and fill the interior with with commercial areas such as shops, warehouses, and nightclubs that maybe don't need much if any daylight (oh and come to think of it prisons could also go in the interior!).

The future is giant revolving artificial termite mounds!

A bit hazy but wasn't there a Doom /Future watch type programme on that had as it's storyline futuristic high rises where the lower floors were given over to the proles who provided the heating to the well to do occupants on the upper floors via body heat and being crammed in

That would be a bit silly. If you want to go out you'll have to pass through the hoi-polloi floors. Worse, the proles could block the lifts and hold the middle occupants to ransome. Of course, the top occupants could escape in helicopters. A bit like the tax system, really.

I've been to that Burj Khalifa; it's quite impressive and given that Dubai is mostly modern, it's in the right place.
