Nothing to do with the proportion of absentee fathers at all?. Mind, if it is, it must be our fault somehow.

"The UK economy grew faster than originally estimated in the first quarter of this year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has said.
Boosted by higher business activity, the ONS said the economy grew by 0.7% compared to the last three months of 2005, and by 2.3% on the year before.

The ONS had previously estimated the growth at 0.6% and 2.2% respectively.

The UK's balance of payments gap fell in the first quarter of 2006 to £8.3bn, from £9.1bn in the previous period.

While the trade in goods showed a deficit of £19.6bn, the trade in services reported a surplus of £7bn. "

But Gordon Brown says this is the most stable economy we've had for 300 years.

Anyways, you say the economy should be more stable so that it is not necessary for both parents to work. How would one arrange this? Increase the NMW? Increase benefits to parents with children? In short, what would you do to achieve this ideal?

We need to worry about child care for ethnic minorities

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/5141844.stm

Government provision of childcare needs to be more specifically targeted to help ethnic-minority families, a Daycare Trust report to MPs has said.
The charity said the present national childcare strategy had benefited all parents, including ethnic minorities.

However, it added ethnic-minority families "felt the strain" of high costs and lack of flexible childcare.

Black families had to spend a higher proportion of their income than white families on childcare, it said.
