    Good speling sooty. Zippy you are bang on on the last part, I couldn't comment on the historical bit but a google search found this list of verses which mention fire several times: Could you please give biblical references describing hell (book, chapter, verse etc)? - Yahoo! Answers

    One of my RE teachers ( a penguin with a couple of theology degrees) told me that the burning fires of hell were a relatively modern idea (probably came from the burning rubbish pits outside Jerusalem), and that hell was actually the absence of the love of God.
