    It's actually very subjective too. I like to read old travel books about places I have been to, just to see what has actually changed. I think some humourous travel books will stand the test of time, well, for people like me.
    Interesting. I read The Iliad when I was 15 and found it a thrilling read, the battle scenes evoking the gore and the terror have never been beaten. Only The Lord of The Rings: Return of the King matched it.

    As you did with the Iliad, I found LotR bloody tedious until that point.

    I was reading something yesterday about how Tolkien was concerned about initial sales of The Hobbit not being great and was considering making changes for the next edition. It went on to sell over 100 million so he was probably worrying over nothing.
