Bet it's great in traffic.
If you get one of these, get the scooby and get on some jap forums as they can get this 2.0 boxer up past 500bhp quite easily. Now that would put some shepherds pie in your pants.

I'm not really interested in those new-fangled curvy models that look like a slightly scaled-up Volkswagon if that makes sense.
I'm told the Mitsubishi Pajero is quite cheap [ Mitsubishi Pajero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ]; but I'm not sure it would be large enough.
However, Satana, a Spanish firm, bought the rights to ther S3, and updated it with newer engines (isuzu Diesels - ironically what most people upgrade to second hand in LRs) and they are significantly cheaper. Have a search for them as they are hard working and cracking and no one will scratch it.

Don't you have an appointment to go and try and prove you're a real man?
Oh and drive safe. Odds are you'll drive 500m and then be so scared the nice salesman will have to drive it back for you.

The one to go for, that will almost certainly become the most collectable one, is the Japanese only RS model which is the lightweight version. It's the Cheapest version they produce, has no A/C and comes with steel wheels, but sure you could spec a set of alloy wheels into it.
The Japs and the English love the rarer, more sought after variants and will hold it's value much better. Think Mitsubishi Evo RS, Skyline N1 variants....
Me. I will wait til they bring the turbo version out in a few years...

If you like that sort of thing...
How about a 2000 plate BMW 330ci plus an audi TT plus a subaru imprezza. All that lot for about £15-20k Can't be bad.
Might cost a bit more in servicing and repair but...
330ci has 231bhp, rear wheel drive, seats 5 and drive really well (I used to have one)
The TT has 4WD and 250bhp (3.2V6) and girls like them. The DSG can change gear faster than you can (My next car).
The scooby can be your tow/winter car. Me not interested - got an X-Trail for towing and winter.
If you get older cars they are lower to tax as they predate emissions regs. :-) Why let the gov tax your fun.
Just an alternative view. You buy a new car and after 4 weeks you get sorta get bored of it. All that pre ownership excitement becomes the mundane. If you keep 3 older cars on the go (not necessarily all taxed and insured at the same time) you can swap which ever one is most boring every 6 months. Eventually you'll have owned all the cars you ever faniced at some point, just not when they first come out. Whatever ever 3 cars you have at the time must be awesome as any thing mundane will have been swapped. Sometime's you'll make a few quid in the process if you are a good haggler in private sales. That's my theory anyway...

If you have to buy new then it's a good option for a front-engined rear wheel drive Drift-Monkey-mobile.
