I thought Apple would use NFC and consequently it would take off - they have a knack of taking things which already exist, 'inventing them' and seeing them gain mass acceptance where they previously couldn't.
But I agree NFC especially in your phone is a gimmick. Nobody is going to take their phone but not their credit card/wallet so it's not actually achieving anything.
I kind of feel the same about contactless charging, it's very cool but not really that useful (except the part where Starbucks can build chargers into the tables).
