It works well with wood screws to get them started. Dip their tips in grease first so that turning them with a proper screwdriver is easier.

Oh, you didn't mention you were screwing bits of metal together.

I was doing some screwing at the weekend and was banging in my hammer good style. Didn't get any complaints at all.
