I think if you had a snap election in all Euro countries now, the far right would do very well. It's just how its always been.

The soviet army had defensive power in 1941, even though it got battered, but it's offensive power was almost nil.
think about the winter war against Finland a couple of years earlier.
It's a lot harder to attack than to defend.
Think about a hedgehog that can curl up to protect itself against a pack of dogs, but could never attack a dog itself.
Thanks to Stalin, the USSR was a basket case.
On the other hand, Stalin was smart enough to step back and let the military and the technocrats take over, which led to the Soviet resurgance and fight back. unlike Adolph, who proceeded to screw the axis war machine
The Soviets were able to attack in winter 41, due to the Siberian reinforcements, then at Stalingrad almost a year later, due to the very stretched Rumanian slovak and Italian line, then a year later because of the massed tank armies that they had built up
apart from that, there wasnt much attack in the Soviet army

What really won WW2 was British stubborness in Churchil who despite Dunkirk refused to make deal and kept fighting ... that and 20 mln+ losses in USSR fighting Axis with all that was available. However in my view (after many years of research which yields different conclusions that I was tought in Soviet school) if Britain made deal with Hitler then USSR would have lost. Knowing what we know about Hitler now the whole world would have lost also.Last edited by AtW; 23 April 2012, 23:35.

The army that held the germans at Moscow did not exist at Barbarossa. it was new. and the armies that threw the germans back, was mostly from the far east, siberian winterised divisions.
the soviets suffered from a couple of severe problems
pre war purges
need to relocate industry to the east
poor quality infantry
