If you're there for 5 days, try and do a day trip to Segovia or Toledo. Organised tours are probably better, but there are fast train services to both cities.

Try going for a "Menu del dia" at lunch (which is around 2 pm in Spain). You'll get 2 courses and a bottle of wine to go at, for around 8-10 Euros per person - more if you are in the tourist centre.

Must see is the royal palace, the interiors are fantastic and the exhibitions are usually good.

Nice and very welcoming ladies can be found just off Grand Via down Calla de le Motera or Calle de Valverde if you are not that fussy. There is a nice McDonalds at the top of the road if you need some pre match energy or post match chompies.
Nothing else worth seeing in Mardid.
Here is the map/streep map link..

Went to the Prado but was shut as it was a bank holiday. Ended up exploring the nearby Parque del Retiro instead. Can well recommend; some impressive gardens if you like that kind of thing and some nice spots to relax with a beer and watch the world go by.

Madrid bound...
Hopefully the rioting will stop before we get there...
Any suggestions on places to see, things to do etc...?
Any places to avoid?
We're staying in the centre for 5 nights.
Thanks
