Working one or two weeks free learning to make pizzas maybe useful but what could anyone learn from TESCO ? I doubt whether they would allow a freebe to work at the till.

No, it's not just that, Dimmo! Would you like to see your lucrative contract replaced with a "voluntary" workface placement that costs nothing to the company? Now you might be thinking: which sane company would do that? Well, ask your clientco manager and tell me about it.

In this case it is about just that. Hence the indignation from all sides.

There is nothing to get as these schemes aren't work, they are slave labour.

I fully expect people who are unemployed to pull their finger out and do something but that doesn't include working for a large retailer stacking shelves and not being paid the minimum wage for it.

The entire point of Tesco using this scheme is to undercut the minimum wage and increase their profits.

Got it in one ATW, at least someone can see this scheme for what it is.

Why would anyone take on paid staff when they can get the same slaves for free? This country seems to be undergoing a change to Victorian values, and not the good ones.

Wow, this initiative is enough even to get CUK questioning whether the unemployed aren't chavs and untermench, imagine how popular it must to the wider electorate. I gather a few companies have dropped out of the scheme, e.g. PoundLand.

I am sure that lots of people will take very low pay, maybe even pay for the priviledge of working, just for the chance of soemthing coming out of it, but the idea of putting it on your CV to 'pad it out' is crazy.

look at me, i'll work for nothing me.

Its a scheme for long term unemployed / unskilled.

I had some questions about some of my jobs in interviews. I pointed out it I was better working and some turned their nose up, others said if he is willing to clean loos and wait on tables through college, fix PC's on bench time etc then that means he isn't stuck up.

But they knew I turned up & did some work. Now apply that to someone who hasn't worked for 12 months? If it isn't their fault and they want to work, a good report on a recent work experience project may help.

And likewise, you are all IT professionals.

Just bring up your CV, and read it as though you are a Tesco Branch Manager looking for a general-duty shop worker.

    Would you interview yourself?

How long do you think that you would stay at Tesco's if a job in your own field came up??

You wouldn't even say 'goodbye' would you, never mind giving notice.
