He doesn't seem to realise that you need Manchester encoding or something similar to actually do the job (because RS232 has a dc offset).

Now, the PIC in the project has an absolute max voltage of about 7.5V.

The maximum voltage is 5.5V.

A 6V lead acid will give about 6.9V when fully charged.

And of course, if you are incautious and connect it back to front...

I connected it to my project and smoke came out.
