Most probably weren't real gays. Any all male institution or organisation where normal outlets are denied will look for abnormal ones. It's the old "Keyholes in the door and knotholes in the floor" syndrome.

I was chatting to a friend the other day who went to borstal. Apparently the film Scum is very realistic except for the rape scene. There were gays but they were in a clique of their own. They were not ignored but not part of the main groups.
