You're asking contractors about joining a union!?!?!?
This sockie has gone too far.
FTIW Union's are only good for when you get in trouble, they offer some legal advice and can tie up a good disciplinary procedure like nobody's business, well it is there business in reality. All the other tulip about greater rights etc doesn't only benefit you if you are a member, everyone gets them or no one.Last edited by SimonMac; 20 December 2011, 09:16.

Such ring-fencing was definitely not permitted, so I contacted my union rep, and the union spoke to the boss a couple of levels above mine, and my boss got told. He didn't speak to me again, so that was a result.
It's only worth joining a union if they actually have the leverage you need against management.
Sounds like Prospect is the most appropriuate for my needs then??

Thinking about joining a union - are there any actually worth signing up with?
For the sake of a couple of quid a week, seem to make sense to have the legal protection if ever needed at any point........
Prospect is a United Kingdom trade union which represents engineers, managers, scientists and other specialists in both the public and private sectors. It was formed on 1 November 2001 by the merger of the trade unions the Institution of Professionals Managers and Specialists (IPMS) and the Engineers and Managers Association (EMA). In 2009, Prospect endorsed a transfer of engagements from the Connect union, the union for managers in the communications sector, which became a part of Prospect on 1 January 2010.
As of 2010 it has 120,000 members, the president is Nigel Titchen and its General Secretary since 2001 is Paul Noon.
It covers staff across the UK from its regional offices in Edinburgh, Douglas, Liverpool, Lutterworth, Cardiff, Bristol, Chertsey, London and Doncaster.

Officially the business I am in is Retail pointing to USDAW, although this does sound a little bonkers!
Are there any staff forums for discussion of issues with management? I work at a large IB and as far as I know there are no union members. But they do have a staff forum for issue discussion. Not that contractors are invited to participate.

Are any of your colleagues in a union? Perhaps they can recommend one.
