Root canals don't hurt at all nowadays - had one this year. And if done properly they shoudn't hurt afterwards since by definition they involve removal of the nerve.
As OP has observed the only pain is holding your mouth open that long.

Be grateful they don't do like they did in 'the good old days', recommend people have all their teeth pulled (regardless of overall state) and a set of full dentures fitted instead.

Strange how the teeth of pets are better than the humans. They rarely need to go to doggy or cat dentist. I wonder if it's anything to do with the more work dentists do the more they get paid.

8:30 this morning had my root canal done, out of the dentist at 9:00. No pain, piece of piss actually compared to last time when the dentist did 3 at once. Side of face is a bit numb and have to go back in a week for the temporary crown to done, then a couple of weeks later for the permanent. Can go to the pub soon as well.

I'd had one or two root canals done by my dentist before, but the most recent one was apparently more complicated, a different NHS dentist in the practice said she would "have a go" if I wanted her to do it, but that it was specialist work and I was better off going to a (non-NHS) specialist. So I went to someone near Harley street. The equipment was far above NHS standard, the computerised X-ray system gave much clearer images, showing one root more than NHS had found, and that one of them was a sort of a corkscrew shape. I was going on holiday so asked him to do everything (one tooth, four roots) at once, ordinarily he would have split it across two sessions a week apart. More than two hours in the chair and the tears were rolling down my face, merely from the pain of holding my jaw locked open. The tooth itself wasn't a problem, during or after.

On the upside, he had a selection of comedy DVDs that I could watch using glasses with built-in LCD displays, on the downside I had seen them all before, so had to re-watch my favourite. Also, as mentioned, the procedure was considerably longer than the length of a movie.

A mis-spent youth I believe. Yep, there's just some stuff in there, don't know what from last time I remember it holds up well although she did say not to drink in the open (not quite too sure what that implies.) Temporary crown goes on in 10 days time
