    I never answer my phone unless I know who's calling and want to speak to them. Agents and anybody else can leave a message; if their errand actually justifies spoken communication I'll call back.

    99% of the time there's either nothing to say ("permanent role for a SNOBOL specialist in the Outer Hebrides, experience of sheep dips an advantage") or communication by email would be more appropriate.

    Tips For Agents

    If you're an agent and you're leaving a voicemail here are some handy hints:

    Speak clearly.
    Say your name very clearly.
    Say your company very clearly too.
    Give a rough indication of why you're calling. "I have a role" is useless. Of course you have a role, it's why you exist.
    Rattling off your phone number at light speed means I have to rewind the message many times and then I get annoyed.
