Many of the gaming hotels I walked through felt dated. I'm thinking 'you know Frank Sinatra is dead don't you?'

I ended up staying in a non-gaming hotel off the strip, 10 minute walk away, called the platinum hotel, very comfortable with loads of space and a full size kitchen. The Ice maker was a nice touch although it's cooler in Vegas now.

Went with the family and stayed at the Four Seasons. Close enough to the action but also doesn't have a casino in it so is quite chilled.

My preference would be luxor as we could get a suite, or 2 rooms, for the cost of one room in the mandalay.

So I'm trying to get accomodation sorted, will be there with young-uns (3 & 1). We're going for a friend's wedding, so would like to stay where they're staying (mandalay), and if not very close. My missus wants to go for a "kid friendly" hotel, which as far as I can tell, means one that is mentioned vaguely favourably on mumsnet. She also doesn't want one where "when you come out the lifts and go through the lobby smells of smoke" - as this was a negative comment about some of the hotels on mumsnet. Also, she'd like a suite, so we can shut the sleeping kiddies away while we're still up (ker-ching!). Personally I don't reckon I'm likely to be going to vegas again, so would like to stay on the strip.

I've tried to reason with her. This is vegas, it's not designed for kids. We're only there for a week, they can put up with (a) a few late nights and (b) walking through a lobby that smells of smoke. We don't need to spend an extra grand to get a suite. We also don't need to stay in the MGM, far enough away from the mandalay, just because one mum on mumsnet says its good for kids. She doesn't like the look of the luxor because there are no positive comments on mumsnet about it.

The Excalibur is the next one along from the Luxor, so 2 blocks from the Mandalay Bay. It's aimed at families. No idea if it would get the Mumsnet seal of approval though. The MGM is on the other side of the crossroads from the Excalibur so not much further.

Do the grand canyon helicopter ride. It's great and may well be stopped soon unless they win their battle with the eco-warriors. We used Grand Canyon Tours - Las Vegas Tours - Papillon although the female pilot made me nervous . For you gambling lightweights...pah! The Bellagio blackjack tables paid for the family's 3 week USA roadtrip and then some

Consider the Black Rock River trip, this was great:

It's really interesting as they show you various aspects of how they constructed the Hoover Dam, ie before it was built various survey work was going on. You also stop at a beach.

No, a cash game, people came and went. I was up to $180 dollars at one point but tilted later in the session and it all disappeared, but thoroughly enjoyed it, where else could you get 6 hours drinks and entertainment for £25.

One guy was on about $200 when I arrived and must have been $600 by the time I went out.

I wouldnt hesitate to recommend it, its one of the most most breathtaking experiences of my life. Flying down into the Canyon by helicopter and landing at the side of the Colorado was amazing.

I agree it's pretty amazing you'll not see many more natural wonders that can top this.

Great - thanks. Will have the family with, so probably won't be spending much time in the casinos. GC is a must see I think. Will have a hire car, but the flight certainly looks tempting!

To drive out to the south rim is a 6-7 hour drive.

The skywalk was my original plan but after the reading the trip advisor reviews I was totally put off.

Actually ended up sharing the plane with another UK family and a couple of Germans (I tried my armature German language on them they were well chuffed), there is only about 8-10 seats close quarters it's a tight squeeze. Yet the noise or the cramped space could not put me off I was Indiana Jones and the red line joining up the dots on the map flying over this landscape!

Oh must stand in front of the Bellagio for the water fountain display, was very impressed. They were playing 'time to say goodbye' when I saw it.

Ive done the 'Sceneic Airlines' flight to the GC, helicoter through the Canyon and boat ride. Cost about $250? per person in 2003 (I think).

I wouldnt hesitate to recommend it, its one of the most most breathtaking experiences of my life. Flying down into the Canyon by helicopter and landing at the side of the Colorado was amazing.

Spent a few hours playing poker, was really fun what with no clocks and daylight environemnt 24/7 in the hotels we finished at 4:30 a.m. and didn't even realise, free drink every half hour or so.

$40 buy-in lasted about 6 hours, never bet more than you can afford to lose.

Bellagio fountains, Stratosphere, Venician, just go for a wander and avoid the mexicans with the hookers cards in the strip.

Didn't make it to Downtown to see Freemantle St.

Vegas is a very peculiar place, but fun for a few days.

Yes, avoid the black jack tables! One minute I was up $275 dollars the next down $100. Your senses are never given a moments rest your hotel room is the only refuge. Much of my time was spent walking around the different hotels, it's Blackpool on steroids.
